In praising Russia’s main river, people also did not remain on the sidelines – they came up with many proverbs and sayings in which it is mentioned.

1. You cannot cross the Volga in a spoon

The proverb alludes to the impressive depth, width and length of the river.

2. Mother Volga bends the back, but she gives money

Any trade connected with work on the river – be it fishing or smelting – is hard, but profitable.

3. The Volga is a long way to swim, but the Danube is wide

The Volga is almost 700 kilometers longer than the European Danube, but the proverb compliments the width of the second river.

4. The Danube and the Volga will never meet

This refers to something unattainable and unrealizable.

5. When the Volga flows up

Or “when a crayfish whistles on the mountain”, i.e. it will never happen.

6. You can’t knead the Volga with oatmeal

Synonym - “a drop in the ocean”. No amount of oatmeal, i.e. flour pounded in a mortar, will make the water in the river thicker.

7. In words, he will swim across the Volga, but, in reality, he won’t swim across a puddle

This is what they say about a braggart whose words diverge from his deeds.

8. The Volga is a good horse: it will carry everything

We are talking about the power of water, with the help of which it is convenient to transport heavy loads downstream.
