‘Swiss Cottage’ opens to the public for the FIRST TIME at Moscow’s Kuskovo Estate (PHOTOS)
One of Moscow's most beautiful landmarks once belonged to the Sheremetev counts.
The Sheremetev counts were prominent statesmen close to the tsar family. Moreover, they were great connoisseurs of art.
The ‘Swiss Cottage’ is the last structure to be built on the estate grounds, erected in the late 1870s by architect Nikolai Benois.
An interesting detail: the house, built in the Alpine chalet style, is made of wood, but the walls of the ground floor are painted to look like brick. The second floor, meanwhile, is adorned with wooden carvings.
The pavilion recently underwent restoration and will now house an exhibition dedicated to the history of Kuskovo and its last owner, Count Sergei Sheremetev, who was a public figure, historian and close friend of Emperor Alexander III.
