The stress in Russian is flexible

Sometimes, the stress can entirely change the meaning of a word!

In some words, the stress varies depending on the form. For example, in the word ‘город’ (‘city’), the stress falls on the first vowel, while in the plural – ‘города’ (‘cities’) – on the last vowel. But there are also words where stress changes the meaning. ‘Замок’ with the stress on the first vowel is a ‘castle’, while ‘замок’ with the stress on the second vowel is a ‘lock’.
