Nizhny Novgorod in 3 Russian words

During the era of the Russian Empire, the largest fair in the country was held there. And, today, Nizhny Novgorod is one of the main industrial centers and the seventh most populated city in Russia. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. МАКСИМ ГОРЬКИЙ (Maxim Gorky)

The famous writer was born in Nizhny Novgorod on March 28, 1868. There are several museums dedicated to his life and work, as well as a theater named after him. From 1932 to 1990, the city was also renamed ‘Gorky’ and some residents still call themselves ‘Gorkovchans’.

2. НИЖЕГОРОДСКИЙ КРЕМЛЬ (Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin)

This is one of the best preserved fortresses in Russia. The length of the kremlin wall is 2,080 meters and its width reaches five meters. According to legend, the lost library of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible may be stored in its dungeons.

3. СОБОР АЛЕКСАНДРА НЕВСКОГО (Alexander Nevsky Cathedral)

Opened in 1881, the Alexander Nevsky Novoyarmarochny Cathedral is also considered one of the main symbols of the city. At 87 meters in height, it confidently dominates the panorama of Nizhny Novgorod. During the Soviet era, authorities wanted to demolish it and build a lighthouse with a monument to Lenin in its place, but they changed their minds.
