Yekaterinburg in 3 Russian words

This is the fourth most populous city in Russia, and a major political, economic, cultural and sports center of the country. Here are its three main symbols.

1. АЛЕКСЕЙ БАЛАБАНОВ (Alexey Balabanov)

Alexey Balabanov is a famous Russian film director behind cult classics like “Brother”, “Brother 2”, “Cargo 200” and “Dead Man's Bluff”. He was born in Sverdlovsk, as Yekaterinburg was then called, on February 25, 1959. Today, on the building of the gymnasium where Balabanov studied, there is a memorial plaque. There are plans to install a monument to the director.

2. ХРАМ НА КРОВИ (Church on Blood)

On the night of July 17, 1918, Nicholas II and his family were shot in the house of engineer Ipatyev. In 1975, the house was torn down, and in 2003, the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land was erected in its place. It became the center of memory of the last Russian emperor and his family, and attracts pilgrims from all over the world.

3. ДОМ СЕВАСТЬЯНОВА (Sevastyanov's House)

Built in the 19th century, the house of businessman Nikolai Sevastyanov resembles a luxurious palace in appearance, in which the neo-Gothic tradition is exquisitely combined with Сlassicism and Baroque. The house is depicted on the newest 5,000-ruble banknote.
