The history of this city is inextricably linked with the history of the Russian Navy. It’s not for nothing that Sevastopol is dubbed the "pride of Russian sailors". Here are three of its main symbols.

1. ПАМЯТНИК ЗАТОПЛЕННЫМ КОРАБЛЯМ (Monument to sunken ships)

This monument was erected in 1905 in honor of the Russian ships that were deliberately sunk at the entrance to Sevastopol Bay during the Crimean War of 1853-1856. This was done to prevent the enemy fleet from breaking through to the city. In 1969, the monument was also placed on the coat of arms of Sevastopol.

2. ЧЕРНОМОРСКИЙ ФЛОТ (Black Sea Fleet)

Founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC, Chersonesos was long a major political, cultural and economic center of the Northern Black Sea region. It was there that Kievan Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavovich was baptized in 988, during whose reign the Christianization of Rus' took place. Chersonesos was still inhabited even in the 15th century. Today, the ruins of that ancient city are located on the territory of Sevastopol.
