Arkhangelsk Region in 3 Russian words
Arkhangelsk Region is renowned for its unique wooden architecture and is widely known as the cradle of the Russian Navy. Here are three more symbols of this region.
1. МИХАИЛ ЛОМОНОСОВ (Mikhail Lomonosov)
Mikhail Lomonosov, a prominent Russian scientist, specialist in chemistry, physics, astronomy, geography, history and linguistics, as well as a poet and artist, was born on November 19, 1711, in the village of Mishaninskaya in the Arkhangelsk Governorate. As a child, he would help his father transport goods across the Russian North, then became self-proficient and set out to conquer the capital.
2. МОРСКОЙ-РЕЧНОЙ ВОКЗАЛ (Sea & River Terminal)
The terminal was built in 1972 in the Soviet modernist style. The ship-like building has become one of the city's symbols and is depicted on the latest 500-ruble banknote. Since the early 1990s, it hasn't been used for its intended purpose – it has housed stores and even local theaters.
3. СОЛОВЕЦКИЙ МОНАСТЫРЬ (Solovetsky Monastery)
This monastery was founded in the mid-15th century on the Solovetsky Archipelago in the White Sea. In the following centuries, it was one of the main religious centers of the Russian North. Under Soviet rule, it housed, at various times, a prison for political prisoners, a school for cabin boys and a museum. In 1988, the monastery building was returned to the Orthodox Church.
