Ostrovsky is considered by many to be the undisputed master of Russian drama, who created an entire theatrical world. His plays meticulously portray the lives and conflicts of the Russian merchant class. He authored an astounding 47 original plays, with classics like ‘The Storm’ and ‘Without a dowry’, exposing the dark side of provincial life in them.
In his youth, Ostrovsky also worked in the judicial system and observed many disputes. What he saw then inspired him to write plays.
