Starting September 1, 2026, international students studying at Russian universities will be eligible for a special scholarship established by the Russian government.

It will be awarded for significant achievements in the Russian language and literature. Candidates will be nominated by the academic councils of their respective universities. They must meet several criteria: no outstanding academic records or grades of ‘satisfactory’ or lower. Publications in scientific journals, presentations at conferences, awards (both international and national) and receipt of a research grant will also be taken into account.

The students who win the award will receive 15,000 rubles per month for a year, while graduate students will receive 20,000 rubles per month. Undergraduate students are eligible starting in their second year and graduate students starting in their first year. This is the government's way of supporting young professionals who will hopefully go on to teach the Russian language and literature abroad.
