The verb ‘любить’ (‘to love’, ‘ to like’) and ‘готовить’ (‘to cook’) are second-conjugation verbs (review verb conjugation in Unit 5). Below is their conjugation in the present tense:

NOTE!

1. First-person singular form of both verbs has an extra ‘л’ letter added to the verb stem: ‘я люблю’, ‘я готовлю’. The other forms have regular second-conjugation endings.
2. Also note the shifting stress in forms of the verb ‘любить’. The stress falls on the ending in the infinitive and in the first-person singular (любить, люблю). In all other forms, it shifts to the stem.

1. Дети любят пиццу.
Children like pizza.

2. Я не люблю грибы.
I don’t like mushrooms.

3. Андрей любит Наташу.
Andrew loves Natasha.

4. Вы любите плавать?

We don’t like to wake up early.

NOTE! The verb ‘любить’ is followed by a noun in the Accusative case or a verb in the infinitive form.
