LESSON 8: DIRECT & INDIRECT SPEECH

Your Russian Course / UNIT 12 “WE FORGOT SOMETHING!”

When you report someone’s words, use the 'что' conjunction to introduce the indirect speech part of the sentence (review in Unit 9). The verb tense remains unchanged from what was used in the original direct speech you are reporting. But, there may be a change of the person and verb form, if necassary.

Джон сказал: “Я из Англии”. John said: “I’m from England”.	Джон сказал, что он из Англии. John said that he is from England.
Мария сказала: “Я работаю в больнице”. Maria said: “I’m working at the hospital”.	Мария сказала, что она работает в больнице. Maria said that she is working at the hospital.
Джон сказал: “Мой племянник учится в университете”. John said: “My nephew is studying at university”.	Джон сказал, что его племянник учится в университете. John said that his nephew is studying at university.
Петя сказал: “Я был на балете”. Petya said: “I was at the ballet”.	Петя сказал, что он был на балете. Petya said that he went to the ballet.
Анна Ивановна сказала: “Мы будем отдыхать на даче”. Anna Ivanovna said: “We will spend vacation at a summer house.”	Анна Ивановна сказала, что они будут отдыхать на даче. Anna Ivanovna said that they will spend vacation at a summer house.
