LESSON 10: PERFECTIVE FUTURE

To express intention, you can use both perfective and imperfective verbs. But, the shades of meaning will be different.

The imperfective future focuses on the process of the action. The perfective future, on the other hand, focuses on the completion or successful result of an action.

Let’s compare the sentences with the aspect pair ‘писать – написать’.

Imperfective:

Я буду писать статью завтра.
I will write an article tomorrow. (There is no distinct intention to finish it. I just say that tomorrow I’ll be busy with the article.)

Perfective:

Я напишу статью завтра.
I will write an article tomorrow. (I have an intention to finish the article tomorrow.)

Here are more examples with the aspect pairs of verbs. Read and note the difference:

I will read this article tomorrow.
(describing an action as a process)

Я буду делать этот отчёт два часа.
I will be doing this report for two hours.
(focus on the process of the action)

Днём я буду готовить ужин.
I will be cooking dinner in the afternoon.
(describing an action as a process)

Я прочитаю эту статью завтра.
I will read this article tomorrow.
(focus on the completion of the action)

Я сделаю отчёт за два часа.
I will make a report in two hours.
(focus on the completion of the action)

Я приготовлю салат и мясо.
I will prepare some salad and meat.
(focus on the result)

The future tense of perfective and imperfective verbs is formed differently.

For imperfective verbs, use the construction “быть + infinitive form” (review in Unit 11).

1. Завтра я буду работать дома.
Tomorrow, I will work from home.

2. Вечером мы будем смотреть фильм.
We will watch a movie in the evening.

For perfective verbs, future tense is formed by the same model as the present tense of imperfective verbs. Compare the present and future forms of the aspect pair ‘читать - прочитать’.
