In Unit 10, we learnt the verb ‘любить’ - ‘like’, ‘love’. There is another way to express that you like or dislike something - ‘Mне нравится + smth’. ‘Мне нравится’ can be used with nouns and infinitive forms of the verb. Listen to the audio & read the examples:
1. Мне нравится эта выставка.
I like this exhibition.
2. Мне не нравится этот телефон.
I don’t like this phone.
3. Мне нравится жить в Москве.
I like to live in Moscow.
The verb ‘нравиться’ means ‘to be pleasing to’, ‘to be liked’. Note the structure of the sentence with ‘нравиться’. The thing that is liked is in the Nominative case, because it is the grammatical subject of the sentence. The person who likes is in the Dative case.
In the sentences below, the verb ‘нравиться’ agrees in number with the subject they're talking about. Compare:
Singular:
Мне нравится эта сумка.
I like this bag.
Plural:
Мне нравятся это сумки.
I like these bags.
‘Мне’ is the Dative case form of the ‘я’ pronoun. Below are some examples with other pronouns:
1. Нам нравится танцевать вместе.
We like to dance together.
2. Вам нравится фильм ‘Титаник’?
Do you like the movie ‘Titanic’?
3. Он говорит, что ему не нравятся эти наушники.
He says that he doesn’t like these headphones.
