To say ‘from’ we use the structure "из/с + Genitive case". Both prepositions ‘из’ and ‘с’ mean ‘from’, but we use them with different types of places.

places (buildings, rooms and closed spaces)

places (open spaces or complexes of buildings)

из магазина (from the store)
из театра (from the theater)
из номера (from the hotel room)

с рынка (from the market)
с вокзала (from the railway station)
с пляжа (from the beach)

events, occasions, and plans

из отпуска (from vacation)
из командировки (from a business trip)
из путешествия (from journey)

с концерта (from the concert)
с тренировки (from the training)
с работы (from work)

Below are some more examples:

1. Я поеду из театра на такси.
I will go from the theater by taxi.

2. Мы поедем с дачи на электричке.
We will go from our dacha on the suburban train.

3. Обычно я езжу с работы на метро.
I usually travel from work by metro.

 

These rules are the same as for choosing betweenв and ‘на’ (see here and here). For example:

  • в театр – из театра
  • на рынок – с рынка
  • на концерт  – с концерта
