We learnt how to say ‘to like/dislike something’ in Unit 14. For example:

Мне нравится этот фильм.
I like this movie.

The verb ‘нравиться’ has also a perfective form ‘понравиться’. For example:

Мне понравился этот фильм.
I liked this movie.

What’s the difference between these two forms?

• ‘Нравиться’ (imperfective) is used to express that you like something now or generally. For example:

1. Мне нравится этот чай. Давай закажем ещё?
I like this tea. Let’s order some more? (I’m drinking the tea now and I like it)

2. Мне нравится черный чай.
I like black tea. (I like black tea, in general)

• ‘Понравиться’ (perfective) is used to express that you come to like something after an experience as a result (after seeing/trying etc.). For example:

1. Мне понравилось это платье. 
I liked this dress. (I’m talking about my impression after trying it on)

2. Мне не понравился концерт.
I didn’t like the concert. (I went to a concert and I didn’t like it)

‘Понравиться’ changes according to the number and the gender of the item you liked. Below is a table with its conjugations:

NOTE! The neuter form of ‘понравилось’ is also used with an infinitive verb to say you liked to do something. For example: 

Мне понравилось гулять в центре.
I enjoyed going for a walk downtown.
