In exclamatory sentences, the words ‘так’ and ‘такой’ are used to give strong emotional emphasis. They express admiration, surprise or other strong feelings, similar to English ‘so’ or ‘such’.

‘Tак’ strengthens an adverb and emphasizes the quality of an action (how something is done).

1. Он так быстро бегает!
He runs so fast!

2. Акико так хорошо говорит по-русски!
Akiko speaks Russian so well!

‘Tакой’ strengthens an adjective, emphasizing the quality of a person or thing.

1. Она такая умная!
She is so smart!

2. У нас такой добрый преподаватель!
We have such a kind teacher!

Note that ‘такой’ agrees with the noun in gender, number and case.

1. Он написал мне такое длинное письмо! 
He wrote me such a long letter!

2. У бабушки такие вкусные пирожки!
Grandma makes such delicious pies.

3. Я познакомился с такой красивой девушкой!
I met such a beautiful girl!
