LESSON 5: PERFECTIVE FUTURE

When talking about intentions in the future, you can use both imperfective and perfective verbs. However, each aspect adds a different nuance.

  • imperfective aspect highlights the action as a process in the future or describes a repeated action.
  • perfective future focuses on the completion or successful result of the action.

Let’s compare the sentences with the aspectual pair ‘читать’ – ‘прочитать’.

Imperfective:

1. Сегодня вечером я буду читать книгу.
This evening, I am going to read a book. (describing an action as a process)

2. Теперь я буду читать новости каждый день.
I will read the news every day from now on. (describing a repeated action)

Perfective:

1. Я прочитаю эту статью завтра.
I will read this article tomorrow. (focus on the completion of the action)

2. Я прочитаю две статьи сегодня и две – завтра.
I am going to read two articles today and two tomorrow. (focus on the result)

Here are more examples with the aspectual pairs of the verbs. Read and note the difference:

Imperfective future

Perfective future

Focus on process/repetition

Focus on result/completion of the action

1. Я буду делать этот отчёт два часа.
I am going to be doing this report for two hours.

(focus on the process of the action)

2. Теперь я буду покупать мясо на рынке.
I will buy meat at the market from now on.

(describing a repeated action)

1. Я сделаю отчёт за два часа.
I will make the report in two hours.

(focus on the completion of the action)

2. Я куплю мясо и овощи.
I am going to buy meat and vegetables.

(focus on the result)

Note that the future tense of perfective and imperfective verbs is formed differently. For imperfective verbs, use the construction ‘быть + infinitive form’. For perfective verbs, future tense is formed by the same model as the present tense of imperfective verbs. Compare the present and future forms of the aspectual pair ‘читать’ – ‘прочитать’.

The construction “давай(те) + perfective future (1st person plural)” is used to make a friendly suggestion to do something together. It has a similar meaning to “Let’s do something” in English.

1. Давай посмотрим фильм.
Let’s watch a movie.

2. Давайте приготовим ужин.
Let’s cook dinner.

In this lesson, we focus on the following aspectual pairs of the verbs:

*The verbs ‘искать’ (‘to look for’) and ‘найти’ (‘to find’) are not a true aspectual pair. However, we are presenting them together here, because they describe related actions, as well as express the process (looking for) and the result (finding) of the same situation.
