More than 700 fossils, ranging in age from 70 to 300 MILLION years old, are hidden in the capital’s subway!

Many columns, walls and passages of the Moscow Metro subway system are covered with natural stone. And, if you look closely, you will see fossil patterns and traces of ancient organisms, such as nautilus and ammonite shells, sea lilies and various brachiopods and gastropods.

Take a look at the most interesting ones below.

At ‘Dobryninskaya’ station (brown line), nautilus shells and ammonites are immortalized in red marble.

Two unique fused fossils, meanwhile, can be seen at ‘Kashirskaya’ station (dark green line). The white “tail” is a sea lily and the large part is a sclerospongiae sponge.

Quite a lot of fossils can be seen at ‘Trubnaya’ station (light green line), especially on the walls behind the tracks. If you look closely, you will spot a 20-centimeter-long gastropod shell on the light marble!

A kind of herringbone pattern can also be seen at ‘Trubnaya’ station. The contrast of the photo was increased, so that it was possible to better see the fossil on the gray background.
