If your city doesn’t have a subway, but you dream of one, consider the experience of this city in Novgorod Region!

In Russia, only seven cities with populations over a million have a subway. But, if you find yourself in the small town of Valday, you'll be surprised.

There are signs there marking subway station entrances, subway maps, sewer manhole covers with the letter "M" and even subway tokens. All of it is real, except… for the subway itself! It was simply made up.

Valday has a population of only about 14,000, but it's very popular with tourists. People visit to see the 17th-century Iversky Monastery, the beautiful lake nearby and to learn about the history of the famous Valday bells.

In 2003, the editorial team of the town's online portal created a guide to local attractions in the form of a subway map.

The lines and stations were drawn by local photographer Timofey Shutov. The result was a map with four lines and 28 stations, with the "subway" even extending beyond the town limits.

Each station has its own description and history. The fantasy subway has become so popular with locals and tourists that it has turned into another local attraction. The tokens, by the way, can be found (and purchased!) at the Museum Bell Center
