Leo Tolstoy
Red Cavalry (1923-1937)
This is a cycle of terrifying, naturalistic stories about the Russian Civil War. Marshal Semyon Budyonny and other Bolsheviks were furious at the work. But, Babel was defended by respected proletarian writer Maxim Gorky, who praised the collection's artistic merits. "Babel doesn't invent, doesn't 'make up' – he… sees every Cavalry soldier in every detail," wrote Gorky.
