Yakutia or the Sakha Republic is the largest federal subject of the Russian Federation. It’s larger than Argentina in terms of area. Here are three of its main symbols.

1. АЛМАЗ (Diamond)

Yakutia is Russia's diamond treasure trove, containing over 80 percent of the country's diamond reserves. The republic is also one of the world's leading diamond producers. Every fourth diamond is mined in Yakutia. The city of Mirny, home to several large quarries and processing plants, is called the "diamond capital" of Russia.

2. МАМОНТ (Mammoth)

Much of Yakutia lies in permafrost, which is why well-preserved mammoth carcasses are often found there. Some even have preserved soft tissue and biological fluids. It's not surprising that the grand World Mammoth Center is planned to be opened in Yakutia.

3. СЕВЕРНЫЙ ПОЛЮС ХОЛОДА (The northern ‘Pole of Cold’)

Several geographic locations are currently vying for the title of the Northern ‘Pole of Cold’ – the coldest place in the Northern Hemisphere. Three contenders are located in Yakutia: the city of Verkhoyansk and the villages of Tomtor and Oymyakon. Temperatures there can drop to -68°C (-89°F).
