‘Steppe’ (English: ‘steppe’, German: ‘Steppe’, French: ‘steppe’) refers to vast flat areas with grassy vegetation in the temperate and subtropical zones. The word entered Russian from Slavic or Turkic languages and then, from Russian, spread into European languages. For instance, it entered English in the mid-17th century, according to the Oxford English Dictionary.
