An ancient Slavic beverage whose Russian name is known around the world.
‘Kvass’ (English: ‘kvass’, German: ‘Kwas’, French: ‘kvas’) is a traditional fermented drink made from rye bread or malt. The word ‘kvass’ means ‘sour drink’. ‘Kvass’ was first mentioned as early as the 10th century, though, back then, it was thicker and stronger than the modern version. The word entered world languages through Russian merchants and travelers and, today, can be found in stores all over the world.
