4 Orthodox Saints who students in the Russian Empire prayed to (PICS)
St. Nicholas
From the saint's life, we know that he studied the Holy Scriptures from childhood, spending his days reading and praying. St. Nicholas is venerated as the patron saint of children, orphans, travelers and sailors. Those who need help with their studies or simply mastering something new also turn to him for spiritual support. In Russia, he is considered one of the most popular saints.
Sergius of Radonezh
His parents sent Bartholomew (the name of Sergius of Radonezh before he became a monk) to school when he was seven years old. But, he soon realized that learning was difficult. Every day, Bartholomew prayed to God, asking for His help. One day, the boy met an elder with whom he shared his sorrow and the elder promised that he would soon be more literate than anyone else. And so it happened.
Believers turn to Sergius of Radonezh for help and support in their studies.
Saint Tatiana
In Russia, Tatiana is considered the patron saint of students. In 1755, on the feast day of the holy martyr, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna signed the decree that founded Moscow University. Since then, January 25 has been celebrated as Students' Day and festive services are held in the university church.
Saint Catherine
Dorothea, daughter of the Alexandrian Emperor Constantine, was well educated, spoke many languages and was renowned as a healer. After being baptized, she received the new name Catherine. In icons, she is often depicted with an inkwell, books, a globe and other attributes symbolizing her intelligence. Saint Catherine is considered the patroness of universities and all students.
