St. Petersburg was built on a swampy landscape: closer to the surface, the ground is soft and tunnels cannot be built in it. That’s why stations are made at a great depth. Because of this, the St. Petersburg Metro subway system is one of the deepest in the world in terms of average depth.

‘Admiralteyskaya’ station is 86 meters (282 ft.) deep – it is one of the deepest subway stations in the world and was opened in 2011.

One of the longest escalators in the world – 137.4 meters (450 ft.) long – leads diagonally down to the platform. But, even it was too short to reach the train. Therefore, the station has an extra escalator.

The station is designed in a nautical style: in the lobby, you can see a mosaic titled: ‘The Founding of the Admiralty’ and, at the entrance, an impressive panel with ships. In addition, it is decorated with anchors, a wind rose on the floor and, next to the name, you will see the very ship that can be seen on the Admiralty spire.
