If you are planning to go to this Russian republic in the Caucasus, you simply must make time to see one of the deepest canyons in the world!

Dagestan has many fascinating mountain villages and sights, but the journey to them is often long and arduous. However, you can reach Sulak Canyon in just an hour or an hour and a half from the republic's capital, Makhachkala. A half-day is enough to admire it and you'll be left with a lifetime of impressions!

2. Take incredible photos against the backdrop of turquoise water

The Sulak River Canyon is a natural wonder. Both the river itself and the Chirkey Reservoir further upstream have a bright azure color. This is all due to the mineral composition of the mountain water and limestone impurities. In any case, your photos will turn out amazing!

3. Feel the wind in your hair on a speedboat

Sulak Canyon is one of the deepest in the world. In some places, its depth reaches 1,920 meters, which is half a meter more than the famous Grand Canyon in the U.S.!

In total, its length reaches 53 km. Speedboats often race along the narrow, winding riverbed and, sometimes, at incredible speeds. Riding them is one of the region’s most popular activities. However, you'll have to drive off-road for a couple of hours and navigate a windy road to descend to the pier.

4. Experience extreme thrills on a zipline or swing

At the narrowest point of the canyon you’ll find a man-made cave called the ‘Nokho Cave’. This is a tourist complex with suspension bridges, extreme mountain trails and outdoor attractions like a zipline and a giant swing over the canyon’s edge. This is certainly not for the faint of heart, but it’s unforgettable! And those who are afraid of heights and speed can pass the time with local coffee and ‘urbech’ (a nut or seed paste) in a cafe right inside the cliff.

5. Try the delicious local fish

Dagestan is famous for its meat dishes, but there is also a trout farm on the river there, so you can have freshly caught grilled fish for lunch! And, as a bonus, mind-blowing views of the canyon can be seen from any of the local restaurants.
