Did you ever notice Russian posters in the cult TV show ‘Friends’?
Many Hollywood stars starred in the famous TV show about six inseparable friends – Joey, Phoebe, Rachel, Chandler, Ross and Monica – and also the occasional Soviet poster!
For example, in Rachel and Monica’s apartment, a poster by artists Olga Volkova and Mikhail Avvakumov titled ‘Welcome!’ is prominently displayed. This was actually a real advertisement for the cultural program of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow.
On the wall in Joe and Chandler’s apartment, you can spot a poster for ‘Kangaroo Boxer’ – this was the name of Vladimir Durov Jr.'s circus act. Two more posters from the USSR, meanwhile, can be seen in Ross’s apartment. A poster for the play ‘Physicists’ by the Leningrad Comedy Theater and an educational poster: “To build – you need to know, to know – you need to study.”
