Fyodor Dostoevsky
And Quiet Flows the Don(1925-1940)
This work is often called ‘The War and Peace of the 20th Century’. For this four-volume novel, the Soviet writer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965. This grand historical saga about the lives of the Don Cossacks during World War I and the Civil War is saturated with sweat, blood, shamelessness, cruelty and suffering.
The most famous screen adaptation of the epic is Sergei Gerasimov's movie. It won several prestigious awards, including the Directors Guild of America Diploma for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ in 1958 and the ‘Crystal Globe Award’ at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
