Mother(1906)

This novel is set in the pre-revolutionary 1900s: A young worker named Pavel Vlasov gathers a secret circle in his home. He and his comrades discuss the plight of factory workers and decide to encourage them to unite to fight for their rights. Although Pavel's mother is worried that her son will be arrested, she is also proud of him. When Pavel is finally imprisoned, she begins distributing leaflets and continues to believe in his cause. The book's ending is very dramatic: The gendarmes seize the mother, but she continues to heroically shout out her son's slogans. The novel ‘Mother’ has been adapted for the screen several times and it was even turned into an opera, which was performed at the Bolshoi Theater.
