Anna Karenina(1873-1877)
This is, probably, Tolstoy's most famous novel abroad and one of the most filmed works of world literature – there are around 30 versions!
This is the incredible story of a woman who gives up everything for love. In the novel, Tolstoy focuses on the nature of happiness and unhappiness in family life. Moreover, the novel features a hero remarkably similar to the writer himself: Konstantin Levin, who leaves behind social life and begins plowing the fields with his peasants.
The novel has been translated into over 40 languages. It has also inspired dozens of plays, musicals and ballets. ‘Time’ magazine, meanwhile, ranked ‘Anna Karenina’ number one on its list of the best books of all time.
