Fyodor Dostoevsky
War and Peace(1863-1869)
Tolstoy's magnum opus, a four-volume epic novel, is known worldwide. It tells the story of several Russian families set against the backdrop of important historical events, primarily Russia's war with Napoleonic France.
The novel has been adapted for film several times. One of the most famous is the 1965 ‘Oscar’-winning movie directed by Sergei Bondarchuk. In 2016, a BBC series based on the novel was also made.
