The Brothers Karamazov(1878-1880)

Fyodor Dostoevsky's last and longest novel, ‘The Brothers Karamazov’ is the quintessence of his reflections on faith, morality, duty and love. It's practically a detective story. The author borrowed the plot from various crime reports: one of three sons was accused of murdering his father. The case involves both money and a delicate love affair: supposedly, the son and father were fighting over the fate of a young beauty.

‘The Brothers Karamazov’ has been adapted for the screen dozens of times around the world. Richard Brooks's 1958 movie was even nominated for an ‘Oscar’. Ivan Pyryev's 1968 Soviet adaptation, meanwhile, won a prize at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. The novel has also been staged in many countries, including a musical in Japan.
