How to get a Russian visa in Brazil?
Travelers from Brazil can visit Russia without a visa, but, in some cases, they will still need one.
When is a visa not required?
Brazil is one of the countries that has a visa-free regime with Russia (more details here).
Citizens of Brazil can enter Russia for tourism, business, cultural or sports purposes, as well as for transit travel, without a visa and stay in the country for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, calculated from the date of first entry.
What documents are needed?
- A valid passport
- A notification of arrival, which must be uploaded in the ‘ruID’ app.
Note: This is a new requirement for citizens entering Russia from visa-free countries. This app also requires the submission of biometric data.
When is a visa required?
A Russian visa is required for Brazilian citizens in the following cases:
- working in Russia
- studying in Russia
- residing legally in Russia
Citizens of countries that do not have a visa-free regime with Russia can also obtain a Russian visa in Brazil.
What documents are needed in this case?
- Application form. For any visa, it must be filled out and printed from the website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Once you select the country, the addresses of embassies and visa centers for document submission will appear.
- Passport and a copy of its main page. For work and student visas, the passport must be valid for more than 1.5 years from the visa’s start date. For other visa types, it must be valid for more than 6 months.
- Passport-sized photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm).
- For a work visa, an invitation from a Russian employer is required; for a student visa, proof of enrollment in a Russian educational institution is needed. Visa fees can be found on the website of the Russian Embassy in Brazil.
When applying for a multiple-entry private visa valid for more than three months, the following additional documents are required
- HIV-negative certificate (mandatory for student or work visas, regardless of duration).
- Medical insurance policy covering the period of the first entry. If the departure date is undetermined, the policy must cover at least 90 calendar days from the visa’s start date.

-The Consular Section of the Russian Embassy in Brazil (Brasília)
- The Russian Consulate General in São Paulo
- The Russian Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro
Appointments are required.
By the way, students enrolled in Russian state educational or scientific institutions can now apply for a Temporary Residence Permit for Education (‘RVPO’ in Russian), which is valid for the entire duration of studies, plus an additional 180 days. During these 180 days, the student can apply for a residence permit in Russia. These documents can be processed in Russia via the ‘Gosuslugi’ portal.
